Some Crazy Lightnings

Thunderstorm near Pritzerbe (Germany) from Mathias Krumbholz

Here some Crazy Lightnings for your Amusement below. Further on check the Scientific Formula below for counting the distance between you and a Lightning strike, in case your mother or Science Teacher never told you how to do it, you poor little Child!

Light travels at about 300,000,000 m/s. Sound travels through air at about 340 m/s. An observer can approximate the distance to the strike by timing the interval between the visible lightning and the audible thunder it generates. A lightning flash preceding its thunder by five seconds would be about one mile (1.6 km) (5x340 m) distant. A flash preceding thunder by three seconds is about one kilometer (0.62 mi) (3x340 m) distant. Consequently, a lightning strike observed at a very close distance will be accompanied by a sudden clap of thunder, with almost no perceptible time lapse, possibly accompanied by the smell of ozone (O3).

Hey Little Child. In case you didn't understand the formula above, here is the explanation for you.

Sound Travels on Earth with a speed of 340 meters per second thus approximately 1 km in 3 seconds.
So when you see a lightning count in your head how many seconds have passed by until you hear the Thunder. Take those Seconds and Multiply those seconds with 340 m and you know how many meters away the Lightning Strike was from you.
And now the way your Mother should have told you to do it: count every 3 seconds until you hear the Thunder where every 3 second is 1 km and you will know how many Kilometers away the Lightning Strike was from you.

Now Thunder, Thunder, Thundercats, hoooooooooo.
